Reliving the Decades through Figure Skating: A Recap of Our Spring Ice Show

From April 27 to 30, the Capital Clubhouse Skating Academy and Figure Skating Club of Southern Maryland held their third annual spring ice show, a magical journey through time. “Skating Through the Decades” showcased more than 70 talented skaters, including groups, solos, duets, trios, quartets, and guest soloists, who took the audience on a spectacular journey through music history.

The show featured iconic songs from the 1920s to the 2000s, including classics such as “Rockin’ Robin,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Happy Together,” “Tom’s Diner,” “These Boots Were Made for Walking,” “Rhythm Nation,” “Lose Yourself,” and “Bad Romance.” The energy in the rink was palpable as we hit the ’80s with a fun rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” The ’90s saw a sweet performance to the Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There For You,” and an energetic performance to “Shake It Off” for the 2000s. The show culminated in a magnificent ensemble performance to a decades mix, symbolizing the show’s theme.

Many families, friends, and figure skating enthusiasts attended the event, demonstrating not only the popularity of the sport but also the sense of community surrounding it. During the Friday show, we were also happy to welcome Michael Reid, Community Coordinator for Southern Maryland Newspapers, who graciously promoted our show before and after the event.

The event was a resounding success thanks to the tireless efforts of the volunteers who worked behind the scenes. From setting up the rink to managing the crowds and everything in between, your dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed. We also owe a huge thank you to the coaches who guided and supported the skaters, and the Figure Skating Director, Chanel Hicks, whose vision brought the show to life.

Apart from the fantastic performances, the event also offered great food from local vendors such as El Jefe Wood Fired Pizza, Ascorpians Touch Italian Ice & Treats, Jet Set BBQ, and Night Owls Tacos, and beautiful flowers from Creative Expressions Florist.

The event concluded on a high note with a fun-filled cast party at Sky Zone. Skaters, parents, and everyone involved in the show celebrated their hard work and achievements.

Overall, “Skating Through the Decades” was a huge success that will live long in the memories of all who participated. Here’s to more such events in the future!
