Embracing Creativity Through Figure Skating Showcases

Figure skating showcases offer a unique and exciting opportunity for skaters to focus on the artistic and expressive aspects of their performances, including props and elaborate costumes. Unlike traditional figure skating competitions and performances, these events emphasize creativity, originality, and emotional connection with the audience. Skaters are encouraged to create captivating and memorable routines emphasizing performance quality, choreography, and interpretation of the music.

Skaters of all ages and levels can participate in showcase events in the following categories:

  • Emotional Performance

  • Choreographic Artistry (Juvenile - Senior, Adult Masters only)

  • Lyrical Pop

  • Character Performance

  • Comedic Impressions

  • Interpretive

While skaters can compete individually, a unique feature of a showcase event is the opportunity to participate as a group. Group showcase events include duets/trios, mini production ensembles (groups of four to eight skaters), and production ensembles (nine or more skaters). A new category for the 2022-2023 season is open inflatable, a theatrical performance by one or two skaters wearing a partial-body or full-body inflatable costume, performed under a spotlight or full arena lighting and without props or scenery.

Another unique aspect of showcase events is that the competitions utilize special judging criteria highlighting performance quality, originality, and audience engagement. Judges assess skaters based on their ability to connect with the audience, interpret the music, and maintain a strong stage presence while also evaluating their technical skills.

The first official U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) National Showcase event occurred in 2004. Skaters can qualify for the National Showcase by placing in the top four at any showcase/theatrical/interpretive event at sanctioned, non-qualifying U.S. competitions or by placing in the top four at National Showcase the previous year. The National Showcase location rotates annually. The 2023 National Showcase competition will take place July 31 - August 6, 2023, and will be hosted by The Skating Club of Boston.

Showcase competitions offer a unique and engaging perspective on figure skating, emphasizing creativity, artistic expression, and audience connection. By providing a platform for skaters to explore their creative talents, these events contribute to the growth and diversity of the sport, inspiring future generations to embrace their creativity on ice.
