Learn to Skate

Let’s kick things off by diving into the basics. The first step in your figure skating journey is often ‘Learn to Skate.’ This foundation level of skating sets the stage for a lifetime of enjoyment on the ice. Learn to Skate programs cater to all ages and skill levels. It’s the very first step in the figure skating journey.

What to Expect from Learn to Skate (LTS):

  1. Structured Lessons: LTS programs offer structured lessons tailored to various age groups and skill levels. Whether a young child or an adult, you’ll find a program that suits your needs.

  2. Fundamental Skills: These programs emphasize building a solid foundation. Skaters will learn essential skills such as balancing on the ice, proper posture, basic forward and backward movements, and stopping safely. These skills are crucial for building confidence and ensuring safety on the ice.

  3. Certified Instructors: LTS programs are led by certified instructors experienced in teaching beginners. They provide guidance, support, and encouragement to help you or your child progress comfortably.

  4. Safety First: Safety is a top priority. Skaters are provided with the necessary safety gear and taught how to use it effectively. This includes gloves, knee and elbow pads, and a well-fitted helmet.

  5. A Sense of Accomplishment: As you or your child progresses through the program, you’ll experience a growing sense of accomplishment. Learning to skate is about developing physical skills and boosting self-confidence.

By participating in LTS programs, you or your child can confidently take those first steps onto the ice, knowing you’re in a safe and supportive environment. These programs are an excellent foundation for those aspiring to take figure skating to the next level.

FSCSM offers year-round LTS programming at our home rink, Capital Clubhouse. Learn more about our LTS programming.

Understanding Ice Skating Disciplines

Once you or your child has mastered the basics, you’ll soon realize that figure skating isn’t just about twirls and spins. It’s a multifaceted sport with various disciplines, each offering its own unique challenges and rewards. In our upcoming articles, we’ll explore these disciplines in detail, but here’s a glimpse of what you can expect:

  1. Singles Skating: The most recognizable discipline, featuring solo skaters performing jumps, spins, and footwork with precision and artistry.

  2. Pairs Skating: A breathtaking discipline involving duos who execute lifts, throws, and synchronized moves in perfect harmony.

  3. Ice Dance: A combination of graceful movements and dance steps, most often performed with a partner, emphasizing rhythm, timing, and expression.

  4. Synchronized Skating: Teams of skaters move in unison to music, showcasing intricate formations and exciting maneuvers.
